Remote control planes are very popular today and for good reason. If you've ever spent an afternoon, or entire day for that matter, watching your plane soar through the air while you control it's every move is a great feeling. You only have to experience it once to get hooked.

Many remote control planes come ready-to-fly right out of the box. Just read the instructions and off you go. They're also available as kits. Some of which are simple to put together and some more more complicated. Some enthusiasts prefer the more complicated ones and enjoy the building process almost as much as flying them. So, this can be a great hobby or parent-child project.

RC planes have gotten increasingly popular because of advancements in the planes themselves. Gas and electric models are available and are much more reliable than just a decade ago. Some manufacturers even put sensors in their planes that overide the user controls to prevent crashes. If the plane gets into a dangerous situation due to an operators mistake the sensors automatically make corrections to avoid a crash.

If your making your first plane purchase an electric model is a good choice for beginners. They are less expensive to purchase, simpler to operate and usually come with rechargeable  batteries. The gas powered models will most likely be your choice down the road if you really get into this hobby.

The gas powered models are more difficult to maintain and assemble. But, they fly longer and are usually more powerful and faster.  And, the purr of the gas engine just adds to the thrill of flying them.

The ultimate in this hobby is radio controlled jets. They are amazingly fast and can fly up to 100 miles per hour. These are definately not  for the beginner or anyone with slow reflexes. And be prepared to spend some money because they can cost several thousand dollars.

The ready to fly planes are great for a gift and first time users. But when this becomes a hobby you'll eventually want to start building them yourself. There is nothing like watching your plane fly through the sky and knowing you built it.

Once you get really involved with remote control planes you might want to join an rc plane club to associate with other enthusiasts. An easy way to find one is to search the internet for clubs in your area. Once you've been around others who love to fly these planes your enthusiasm will grow even more.
